Gilgit-Baltistan Welcomes New Caretaker Cabinet Amidst Transition
After a period of uncertainty, Gilgit-Baltistan has officially welcomed a new 14-member caretaker cabinet, a significant step towards stabilizing governance as the region prepares for upcoming elections. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister, acting in his capacity as Chairman of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council, and came following a recommendation from the caretaker Chief Minister, Justice (R) Yar Mohammad.
This transition period began on November 25, 2025, when Yar Mohammad took his oath. However, it wasn’t until recently that the cabinet was finalized, causing some concern over governance lapses during this crucial time. The new cabinet includes a diverse representation of twelve ministers and two advisors, ensuring that different voices and perspectives are heard. The ministers appointed are Sajid Ali Baig, Engr Altaf Hussain, Ghulam Abbas, Col (Rtd) Abrar Ismail, Meher Dad, Sharafat Din, Maulana Sarwar Shah, Raja Shehbaz Khan, Mumtaz Hussain, Dr Niaz Ali, Syed Adil Shah, and Bahadur Ali. Advisors Abdul Hakeem and Syeda Fatima will assist in steering the caretaker administration towards its mandate.
With general elections anticipated by June, this caretaker government’s main responsibility is to ensure smooth daily operations while preparing for a transparent electoral process.
