Rising Tensions: Worker Abductions in Balochistan

The recent events in Khuzdar district highlight the escalating security concerns in Balochistan. Unidentified gunmen attacked a construction company camp, abducting 20 laborers and causing significant destruction by setting fire to heavy machinery and vehicles. This incident took place in the remote Kaleri area of Naal, about 80 kilometers from Khuzdar, disrupting work on a vital road project aimed at improving connectivity between Khuzdar and Basima.

According to Levies officer Ali Akbar, the attackers blocked the highway before storming the site, inflicting heavy damage on at least eight vehicles, including transport trucks and construction equipment. Most of the abducted workers were from Sindh province, indicating the issue’s far-reaching impact as it targets laborers seeking employment opportunities.

Zulfiqar Ahmed, the manager of the construction company D-Baloch, confirmed that two workers were released later, but 18 remain unaccounted for. This attack has not only disrupted operations but has also instilled fear among the staff, complicating future projects in the area.

The incident prompted a large-scale response from security forces, including the Levies, Frontier Corps, and Counter-Terrorism Department, who have launched a joint search operation. Local tribal elders are also involved, providing valuable assistance in the effort to locate the missing workers. However, no group has claimed responsibility for this brazen attack yet.

This recent assault follows another alarming incident where nine workers were kidnapped in Mastung, bringing the total number of abductions in a week to 27. Such violence raises serious concerns about the safety of laborers and private companies engaged in developmental projects in the region.

Authorities in Balochistan have condemned these attacks and vowed to bring the culprits to justice. However, analysts warn that such incidents could undermine the fragile developmental progress in Balochistan and exacerbate the region’s security crisis. They urge the government to create a more comprehensive security strategy to protect workers and ensure that vital infrastructure projects can move forward without further disruption.

As investigations continue and security forces remain active in the areas affected, the hope is that solutions will emerge to resolve these pressing issues.
