Discovering the Hazara Waterfalls: A New Gem in Eco-Tourism
If you haven’t heard about the Hazara Waterfalls in Jab Valley, Haripur, you’re in for a treat! This stunning location has recently undergone a transformation thanks to a UK-funded eco-tourism initiative aimed at revealing the area’s unique natural beauty. With the goal of making Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s tourism landscape richer, this project is just the beginning of an exciting journey.
Funded by Rs5 million from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) through WWF-Pakistan’s Water Resource Accountability Project (WRAP), the initiative has successfully completed its first phase. You can now enjoy a secure walking trail, a cozy visitor hut, and spectacular viewing platforms—all designed to enhance accessibility while respecting the local environment.
Previously, visitors navigated a hazardous path to reach the site’s breathtaking cascades, some of which soar nearly 400 feet high. With these new facilities in place, eco-friendly tourism is now at the forefront, ensuring that Jab Valley’s delicate ecosystem is preserved for generations to enjoy.
Hassan Nisar, the visionary behind Metrix Pakistan, discovered these enchanting waterfalls in 2021. Recently, he expressed a wave of emotions upon visiting the site again to see the completed project. “Just a few years ago, this place was hidden from the world,” he recalls. “Now, we have safe pathways and local families directly benefiting from tourism.” For him, it’s not just about the structures; it’s about instilling hope in the community. The smiles on local youth, who are now guides and vendors, tell a deeper story of progress.
Raja Muhammad Tahir, a well-respected journalist in Haripur, has championed these waterfalls since their discovery. He highlights that the area is no longer an unrecognized gem but a prominent destination on Pakistan’s tourism map. “This isn’t just luck; it’s persistent effort and vision,” he emphasizes. Yet, as exciting as this is, Tahir warns that we need to be mindful of responsible tourism management to maintain the area’s natural charm and ensure that the economic benefits are enjoyed by the local community.
Residents share this optimism, noting that several families have started offering guided tours, refreshments, and handmade crafts to visitors. The project has not only provided new income opportunities but has also sparked environmental awareness among younger generations.
With the first phase now complete, Hazara Waterfalls have transitioned from an untouched natural wonder into a well-managed eco-tourism destination. It’s a place where natural beauty meets community benefit and environmental stewardship.
