Gilgit-Baltistan Elections: What to Expect Amid Weather Delays
The anticipation for the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections has been palpable, especially with the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, announcing January 24, 2026, as the polling date. However, recent reports suggest that due to harsh winter weather conditions, this date might be pushed back to June or July.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission has confirmed that, procedurally, the elections are set to happen, as noted in the official notification that aligns with Article 48-A(1) of the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018 and Section 57(1) of the Election Act 2017. But with significant snowfall and logistical challenges, it’s not surprising that officials are contemplating a delay.
The chief election commissioner (CEC) is tasked with coordinating this election and has highlighted the necessity of presidential approval to formalize any changes. Once the situation becomes clearer, we can expect an updated polling date to be announced.
The region has seen a significant political shift recently, as evidenced by the formation of a caretaker setup on November 25, following the end of the Gulbar Khan-led government’s five-year term. Justice (Retired) Yar Mohammad has since taken the helm as caretaker Chief Minister.
