Political Tensions Rise Over Sohail Afridi’s Recent Visit
In a gripping exchange of words, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has sharply criticized the federal government, claiming it is using intimidation to push Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan into submission. During a press conference held in the Punjab Assembly, Afridi expressed his concern that this approach is dragging the country deeper into political and economic chaos.
One critical point in Afridi’s argument was centered on governance, stating that countries falter when those in power prioritize silencing opposition rather than tackling pressing issues like inflation and unemployment. He highlighted his trip to Lahore, intended to meet with PTI’s organizational members, which was marred by police harassment and arbitrary arrests at the Chakri Interchange.
Afridi labeled the current government as illegitimate, accusing it of employing fascist tactics against PTI members. His commentary extended to economic matters, where he claimed the stock market’s upswing is merely political engineering, obscuring an alarming rise in national debt—from Rs43 billion to nearly Rs80 trillion. He portrayed the current state of governance as detrimental, suggesting that while leaders promised to sell off personal assets to clear national debt, it was the national airline, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), that faced the brunt of such decisions.
As tensions built, reports surfaced within the Punjab Assembly of possible obstacles to Afridi’s entry. Leader of the Opposition, Moin Riaz Qureshi, voiced strong objections, indicating protests would follow if any restrictions were levied against the K-P CM and his team. Fortunately, after some initial confusion, the assembly approved Afridi’s entry, reiterating the importance of allowing political dialogue.
The atmosphere within the assembly was charged as Qureshi accused the government of fostering a climate of fear, alleging police raids targeting young PTI supporters even during the night. This prompted further responses from both sides, with MPA Rana Aftab Ahmed affirming the ideological commitment of opposition members despite facing significant challenges.
As Deputy Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channar sought to clarify the situation, he emphasized that Afridi was recognized as a guest of Punjab, ensuring his ability to engage with opposition members.
