Pakistan and Afghanistan Take Steps Toward Trade Cooperation: The Formation of a Joint Committee

In a crucial move aimed at easing tensions and reviving trade, Pakistan and Afghanistan have announced the formation of a 13-member joint committee. This committee is set to hold formal negotiations at the Torkham border, a vital trade gateway for both nations.

The joint committee consists of six representatives from Pakistan and seven from Afghanistan. Leading the Pakistani delegation is Syed Jawad Hussain Kazmi, the Adviser to the President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI). On the Afghan side, the discussions will be headed by Mohammad Wali Amini.

Kazmi recently spoke to the media, highlighting the committee’s main objectives: reopening trade routes, overcoming barriers in border management, and ensuring the seamless flow of bilateral trade. He emphasized that the committee would work on creating a practical roadmap to address the challenges faced by traders and the public alike.

The Pakistani committee features key figures like Sardar Muhammad Ayub Maryani, the President of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce, and Haji Muhammad Yousaf Afridi, the President of the Khyber Chamber of Commerce. The Afghan side includes representatives from various provincial chambers, ensuring a well-rounded approach to the issues at hand.

The timing for these negotiations couldn’t be more critical. Since October 12, all trade crossings between the two nations have been closed, leading to significant financial strains on traders. The business community on both sides is keenly awaiting the results of these talks, hoping they will lead to the reopening of Torkham and other critical border crossings.

As the negotiations unfold, there’s a renewed sense of optimism that practical solutions will emerge, benefiting not just traders but also local communities that rely on this economic lifeline.
