Rising Concerns: The Unsafe Buildings of Karachi

Karachi, a bustling metropolis, has recently witnessed heartbreaking tragedies that highlight a crucial issue: the alarming state of aging and unsafe buildings. Over the weekend, two separate incidents of structural collapse left at least three people dead, including two young children, and several others injured. These events have reignited conversations about the urgent need for building safety regulations in the city.

In Lyari’s Moosa Colony, tragedy struck when the roof of a third-floor apartment suddenly collapsed. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the building had been in a state of disrepair, yet families continued to live there, often due to financial constraints. The collapse claimed the lives of 45-year-old Danish and his three-year-old daughter, Almiya, while his 11-year-old daughter and several others were left injured. Local volunteer groups like the Edhi Foundation quickly responded, aiding in rescue efforts and transporting the victims to Civil Hospital.

The situation in Manzoor Colony was equally devastating. A two-year-old boy named Hasan died when a wall from a neighboring building fell onto his home. His father and brother were injured but are currently receiving medical care. Authorities suggested that the external wall’s weakened condition was a significant factor in the collapse, prompting an ongoing investigation.

But it’s not just structural issues that pose a threat. The city is also grappling with incidents of electrocution. A recent case involved Abdullah Nagori, brother of a local political leader, who suffered a fatal electrocution at his residence. Another unidentified victim was reported near a private hospital in Boat Basin.

These incidents serve as a wake-up call, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced building regulations and safety measures. Many residents feel trapped in unsafe living conditions, torn between the need for shelter and the reality of their surroundings.
