Understanding the Indus Waters Treaty: A Call for Compliance
Water is life, especially when it comes to shared resources between nations. Recently, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, made headlines by urging India to respect the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). This treaty has been a cornerstone for water-sharing between the two countries since 1960, but recent tensions have raised concerns about its future.
During a recent Security Council briefing, Ahmad highlighted that India’s unilateral actions earlier this year to suspend water flow poses significant risks. In fact, the Permanent Court of Arbitration had to step in to reaffirm the treaty’s validity in 2025, making it clear that no country can unilaterally modify or suspend its provisions. Ahmad firmly stated, “We expect full respect for the treaty and a return to compliance.”
But the implications go beyond just water-sharing. Ahmad linked environmental degradation with broader security challenges. As climate change exacerbates issues like rising sea levels and resource scarcity, the need for international cooperation is more crucial than ever. He advocated for eco-conscious approaches to peacekeeping and urged the Security Council to focus on recovery efforts after conflicts, emphasizing that environmental damage can escalate insecurity.
In a different context, Pakistan also recently supported a UN resolution to delist Syrian leaders from sanctions. Ahmad described this as a step towards stability and recovery for a nation ravaged by conflict for over a decade. While hurdles remain, including terrorist threats, he underscored the importance of a Syrian-led political process for sustainable development.
