Key PTI Leaders Convicted in Anticipated Court Rulings
In a significant turn of events in Lahore, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) has found several prominent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders guilty in cases related to the May 9 riots that followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhary, Mahmoodur Rasheed, and Omar Sarfraz Cheema now face ten-year sentences after being charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) for inciting public unrest.
The convictions stem from incidents at both Kalma Chowk and Gulberg, where vandalism erupted in the wake of Khan’s arrest. The ATC’s rulings were delivered by Judge Arshad Javed, who also ordered the capture of 12 proclaimed offenders linked to these cases. It’s worth noting that the police filed cases against 37 individuals, with trials ongoing for 24 of them.
During the trial, the prosecution put forth charge sheets for 36 accused, but notably, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi was not formally charged. His case will be addressed later when the court receives the necessary documentation.
These rulings come shortly after a similar conviction for the same PTI leaders in another incident involving the GOR Gate attacks on the same day — again resulting in ten-year sentences. While the court acquitted several other PTI members due to insufficient evidence, the message is clear: the crackdown on political dissent is intensifying.
